The Colleague Relations Director is responsible for responding to complex colleague relations issues within established service level agreements.  The incumbent is a consultant on employment law, performance management and good management practice and regularly counsels more senior level managers who need advice on dealing with issues in these areas.  He/she interacts regularly with the Vice President of Human Resources to provide updates on open cases, consult on matters of greater risk or sensitivity and to provide insights and input into more complex colleague relations issues. The incumbent is a service-oriented problem solver who handles difficult issues with interpersonal sensitivity, diplomacy and tact. He/she is regarded by the general colleague population as a fair, thorough and highly competent HR practitioner.


  • Provides interpretation and advice to managers on more complex employment law, organization policy interpretation and overall colleague relations issues.
  • Manages a significant case load (in complexity and number), driving inquiries to resolution in a timely fashion; handles more serious inquiries with a sense of urgency.
  • Provides consulting around more senior level performance management issues.
  • Conducts thorough investigations related to claims of harassment or discrimination and makes recommendations for resolution. Proactively ensures the HR leader for the institution remains abreast of developments, and collaboratively discusses appropriate resolution.
  • Leads union-free interventions.
  • Provides consulting on complex performance management issues. Helps managers differentiate between performance and behavioral issues. Provides counsel on how to provide constructive feedback, write effective disciplinary actions, and provide clearly written objectives and performance evaluations.
  • Refers managers to appropriate training classes and consulting available on a wide range of management, leadership and teambuilding interventions..
  • Proactively ensures the assigned strategic HR consultant is kept current on the progress of investigations and is included in discussions with local management on the resolution of colleague relations issues. 
  • Provides excellent customer service through a sense of urgency and meets SLA requirements.
  • Ensures appropriate case details are documented in the case management system.
  • Handles issues with diplomacy and tact. Demonstrates patience, respect and care for the individuals involved, and creative problem solving.
  • Effectively deescalates issues. Mediates the resolution of colleague complaints.
  • Reviews termination requests and provides HR consulting partners and management with appropriate action plan. Escalates more complex or high risk complaints to the Vice President of Human Resources and/or in-house legal counsel.
  • Provides expert level advice on EEO, FMLA, ADA, sexual harassment and hostile work environment related issues, both from a legal and organization-wide policy/practice standpoint. Educates managers regarding the spirit and intent of laws, regulations and organizational policy. Conducts investigations, reports on potential problem areas and recommends appropriate action.
  • Represents DeVry in EEOC hearings and lawsuits.
  • Monitors and responds to employee complaints received through Ethics Point or other formal channels. Communicates/escalates issues to appropriate individuals and assures appropriate resolution.
  • Remains current in applicable state andfederal, law.
  • Participates in policy, process, training and communications-related to HR activities.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree; deep employee relations experience or employment law coursework is highly desirable.
  • A minimum of twelve years of experience in human resources, with a minimum of 6 in colleague relations with extensive exposure to a wide range, severity and risk of employee relations issues. Has experience giving depositions, representing organizations in EEOC or other hearings.
  • SPHR or similar certification is strongly preferred.
  • In-depth experience with claims and disputes such as EEO, FMLA and ADA including participation in depositions, EEO hearings.
  • Excellent communications, training, interpersonal skills and influencing skills. Is an effective listener and is recognized as an individual with high integrity.
  • Strong facilitation, mediation, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated track record of independently completing complex investigations.
  • Good business acumen and writing skills.
  • Skill in analyzing human resource and management problems and devising effective solutions.
  • A savvy influencer, who recognizes the broader implications of sensitive issues and can manage resolution at the most senior levels.
  • An effective communicator, adept at operating in areas where there is no precedent, or guides for actions.
  • Ability to operate well in ambiguity.
