    Under the direction of the Senior Counsel - Commercial, the Contracts Manager will lead the creation, development and management of the Contracts Management Department for DeVry University.  This role with be responsible for defining the Contract Management Department scope of services and development and implementation of the entire range of contract formation, negotiation and administration policies and processes for vendor/supplier and customer contracts.  Eventually, directs the activities of contract professionals from simple, routine to highly complex contractual arrangements of strategic importance to organization.


    • Establishes contract policies and processes to ensure achievement of corporate expectations. Develops, integrates and maintains contract management program, database, tools, templates, methods, and processes. Responsible for contract work flow. Provides periodic updates on contracts expected to expire within set time intervals.  Prepares and disseminates contract information to internal stakeholders and responds to inquiries regarding contracts and obligations related to them.
    • Administer contracts from contract execution, budget, auditing and analysis to contract close-out. Manages the development and delivery of contract performance metrics and SLAs for strategic contracts and vendors.
    • Communicates organizational objectives to Contract Management department. Ensures appropriate contract staffing and budget levels. Manages the training, oversight of contract manager activities and ensures compliance with DeVry standards and procedures. Understands the business case and has an appreciation of financial/analytical issues and profit and loss implications.
    • Work with finance and operations teams to ensure that contracts contain optimal financial terms for DeVry.
    • Develops contract terms and conditions. Analyzes proposed contracts to determine risk and prepares and provides alternative approaches to mitigate the risk. Negotiates and administers new contracts and amendments/changes in accordance with DeVry policies. Creates, prepares, reviews and edits contracts, amendments, modifications and change orders. Reviews various complex documents, agreements and contracts for areas of improvement or revision.  Assumes leadership role, as appropriate, for resolving all significant contractual issues and ensures their timely elevation to supervisor including those related to contract compliance, risk, financial and change activity.  Coordinates with other DeVry functional staff, such as finance, tax and risk management, to obtain input relative to their areas of expertise and consolidates and incorporates issues of concern into risk containment recommendations. Participates directly with vendors as lead or key member of negotiating team in major purchasing transactions, and drafts appropriate language specifically addressing risk areas for inclusion in RFPs and contracts.
    • Develops an effective contract risk management program through education, training and by example. Develops contract management training program to educate the DeVry organization on the principles of strategic contract management.
    • Develops effective relationships with senior functional and institutional stakeholders built on a deep understanding of the vendors and products/ services that are critical to the institution as well as the contract management gaps / inconsistencies unique to each institution
    • Interacts with vendors and internal clients in a professional and diplomatic manner to resolve problems or questions related to contract interpretation, claims and/or disputes. Coordinates with and advises other team members on action for contract changes related to pricing, delivery schedules, payment or other terms

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or Law (ideally) required.
    • 10+ years of experience of managing critical contracts and/or supplier relationships, developing process and procedures, delivering improvement programs and working with collaborative supplier and/or customer arrangements.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work well autonomously in a fluid/fast-paced, highly collaborative, team environment.
    • Ability to establish and implement departmental goals and objectives.
    • Excellent presentation, teambuilding and leadership skills.
    • Proven management and delegation ability.
    • Pro-active self-starter with proven ability to plan, organize and prioritize own workload and work on own initiative
    • Possesses strong work ethic and customer service orientation and ability to multi-task and manage ever changing and often conflicting priorities
    • Ability to anticipate, adapt to and react to changes in the business environment
    • Ability to develop strong and effective working relationships
    • Knowledge of contracts law.
    • Experience with software, hardware and cloud computing purchases and UCC.
    • Must be professional in demeanor, able to work well with others, be a leader and decision-maker and capable of performing under pressure.
    • Must be able to analyze and critically comment on proposed contract language and in general must be able to express self clearly in both written and verbal communication.
    • Strong experience in negotiation of complex and stressful contracts ensuring best interest for the Organization.
    • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly assess potential for risk and opportunity.
    • Possesses managerial courage in supporting Company policy and sound decision making when dealing with internal and external parties.
    • Possesses ability to dispense direct and actionable feedback to constituents at all levels tactfully.
